First shot at a scientific paper
Last semester at university we had to write a scientific paper that summarized already-existing information (as an exercise for the bachelor thesis). There were several choices for a group, each with different focus and I decided to direct my paper in the Security and Privacy sphere.
Next came the question: “What should my topic be?”. The semester before, I did a course for “Privacy Enhancing Technologies”, which influenced me a lot to start thinking more about my privacy and taking it more seriously (I took the decision to “de-Google” my life after it; I may perhaps write a post about this later on). One of the main topics in the course was Tor. Now, I knew what Tor was and had a basic idea about how it worked, but this course really gave me a lot of insight and made me interested in the topic. Naturally, the following question arrived:
How one can be deanonymized in Tor and how can this be avoided?
This topic seemed like a really good idea for such a basic paper, as it was interesting, more practically oriented and a lot of people assume that using Tor automatically means that their anonymity is protected.
The paper can be found here. Happy reading!
